They always term Korea’s 20th-century history “tumultuous”… but that is an understatement! Even European nations suffered less violent upheaval and overly rapid changes. This nation has recently opened a new and first “National Museum of Korean Contemporary History.” It attempts to display the country and its people’s history in a comprehensive and structured way, a great place for a few hours of concentrated education and viewing remarkable artifacts. The exhibits do not have much English explanation, and the various possible interpretations of the events & personalities displayed can differ wildly – and so it is better to go there with a reliable & chatty expert guide! We ran this tour last spring, but in three hours managed to only cover the 1876-1960 Halls – this time we will focus on the “Development of the Republic of Korea” (1961-1987) and Modernization and Korea’s Vision of its Future (1988 onward) sections.

Our guide will lecture us through most of what happened, providing context and multiple possible points-of-view. Dramatic stories will be shown and told of Brutal Dictatorship, Rapid Development, Democracy Movement, Olympics and Opening to the World, Success and Collapse, Sunshine and Betrayal…
